As part of Hat Extravaganza 2006, these awards will show the vast talent Australia holds in the field of hat making. Australia is one of the few countries that has a healthy expanding millinery industry.
Hats will be judged on :

1.Technique
2.Finishing
3.Design & Innovation

CATEGORY #1

Torb and Reiner TERTIARY STUDENT Millinery Awards.
A number of TAFEs throughout Australia now teach Certificate 1-4 in Headwear/Millinery.
The Awards will showcase up & coming milliners and recognise their efforts.
Open to all students in Australia currently training in millinery Certificate 1-4 and to all year levels.



CATEGORY #2

Torb and Reiner NON-TERTIARY Millinery Awards.
For keen hat makers who love making hats & improving by attending millinery courses & classes. Must not have any formal tertiary training.

PRIZES for both Categories

  • Category 1: Supreme Award.
    $300 cash & a Torb & Reiner millinery education dvd/video.
    Bonus prize: 4 - 6 week trainee internship at world famous milliner Philip Treacy, London. Prize valid till 31 December 2008 (travel/accom. not included).
     

  • Category 2: Supreme Award.
    $300 cash & a Torb & Reiner millinery education dvd/video.
     

  • Category 1: Cyril J Preston Encouragement Award
    Millinery materials to the value of AUD $150, donated by Cyril J Preston.
     

  • Category 2: Encouragement Award
    Millinery materials to the value of AUD $100.
    "What is it about hats" - a documentary film about people under the brim, focussing on the unique person under each hat, showing that a woman who places a hat on her head enters a secret and privileged world. US film maker Andee Kinzy believes that hats make a strong statement whenever they appear - in part because so few people are daring enough to don one.
     

  • Category 1:Peoples Choice Award
    Judged by Hat Extravaganza visitors.
    Sponsored by TAFTA - The Australian Forum for Textile Arts.
    Prize: Textile Fibre Forum Magazine subscription for 2 year.
     

  • Category 2:Peoples Choice Award
    Judged by Hat Extravaganza visitors.
    Sponsored by TAFTA - The Australian Forum for Textile Arts.
    Prize: 500 Bracelets - coffee table jewellery book.
